카이스트 팔레스타인인 졸업생의 편지
“이번 CIPA 포럼은 문화를 기념하는 것이 아니라, 억압을 정상화하는 것입니다”
세계 최고의 학술 포럼인 CIPA2025에서 이스라엘의 테크니온 공과대학은 제외되어야 합니다.
한국의 여러 대학의 학생들도 목소리를 내고 있습니다. 이 포럼을 공동 주관하는 카이스트를 졸업한 팔레스타인인으로서 이 메시지를 보냅니다.
저는 오늘 우리가 정치적인 문제를 위해서가 아니라, 무엇보다도 인간의 존엄과 생명을 지키기 위해 모인 것임을 힘주어 말하고 싶습니다. 굶주림과 죽음의 공포 속에서 상상할 수 없는 고통을 겪고 있는 아이들과 어머니, 아버지, 그리고 가족들의 삶을 위해서입니다.
이것은 더는 전쟁이 아닙니다. 모든 생명을 대상으로 하는 인종청소를 동반한 인종 학살입니다. 오늘날 우리는 식량 지원 배급소에서 사람들이 의도적으로 표적이 되는 새로운 차원의 공포를 목격하고 있습니다. 여기는 전쟁터가 아닙니다. 여기는 죽음의 덫입니다.
며칠 전, 이스라엘은 알자지라 방송 기자들이 머물던 천막을 공격했습니다. 자신들의 범죄가 알려지는 것을 원하지 않기 때문입니다. 그리고 이제 이스라엘은 가자지구 전역을 완전히 점령했다고 발표하며 평화에 대한 모든 희망을 짓밟았습니다.
가자지구에는 폭격과 질병, 기아와 두려움 등 모든 형태의 죽음이 존재합니다. 하지만 가장 끔찍한 죽음은 육체적인 죽음이 아닙니다. 기억의 죽음입니다. 외쳐도 아무도 듣지 않을 때, 언론에 말해도 아무도 관심을 가지지 않을 때, 분노와 억압 속에, 잊혀져 죽을 때입니다.
저는 한 번도 팔레스타인에 갈 수 없었던 팔레스타인 사람입니다. 저에게 고향은 오직 이야기 속에만 존재합니다. 팔레스타인으로의 귀환권을 얻는 대신, 저는 가장 잔혹한 방식으로 역사가 반복되는 것을 보며 자라야 했습니다. 또 다른 나크바, 또 다른 67년 전쟁, 가자에서 벌어지는 학살입니다. 제가 꿈꾸라고 들었던 그 땅은 이제 끊임없는 죽음의 장소가 되었습니다.
저는 서안지구에서 친척을 잃었습니다. 자비도 정의도 모르는 무자비한 점령의 희생자들입니다. 그리고 다른 이들은… 아직 살아있기를 기도할 뿐입니다.
체계적으로 인권을 유린하는 국가로부터 어떤 문화 교류를 기대할 수 있습니까?
토지 강탈과 몰수의 문화입니까?
아이와 여성, 심지어 아기를 안고 있는 여성까지 잡아 가두는 관행을 배워야 합니까?
아니면 수백만 명을 숨이 끊어질 때까지 굶기는 행위를 교류해야 합니까?
이번 CIPA 포럼은 문화를 기념하는 것이 아니라, 억압을 정상화하는 것입니다.
이것은 인류 양심의 오점이며, 역사 속의 어두운 흔적입니다.
수개월째 가자지구는 끊임없이 폭격을 받고 있습니다. 그럼에도 세상은 외면하거나, 더 나쁘게는 이를 정당화합니다. 저는 사람들이 가자 상황을 정당화하거나 무시하며 이스라엘이라는 테러 집단과 협력하는 마음을 이해할 수 없습니다.
우리가 항의하는 이유는 모든 팔레스타인인의 생명이 소중하기 때문입니다. 점령, 아파르트헤이트, 인종청소는 결코 정상화될 수 없습니다. 우리는 즉각적인 휴전을 촉구하며 봉쇄 해제를 요구합니다.

A message from a Palestinian
who graduated from KAIST
“CIPA2025 does not celebrate culture,
it normalizes oppression”
Israel’s Technion should be excluded from CIPA2025, the world’s leading academic forum in Seoul. Students from various Korean universities are also speaking out. This is a message from a Palestinian who graduated from KAIST, the co-organizer of the forum.
I would like to emphasize that this gathering is not just a matter of politics, but also a matter of humanity. For the lives of children, the mothers, the fathers, and families who are living through unimaginable horror under the sound of hunger and death.
This is not a war anymore. This is a genocide with ethnic cleansing that targets every kind of life. Today, we witness a new level of horror where people are being deliberately targeted at food aid distribution points. These are not battlefields. These are death traps.
Just few days ago, Israel targeted a group of journalists from Aljazeera news tv at their tent, they don’t want any one to spread the truth about their crimes.
And now they announced the full occupation of Gaza land, throwing away all hopes of peace.
In Gaza, every form of death exists, from bombings and disease to starvation and fear. But the most terrifying death of all is not physical. It’s the death of memory. When you scream and no one listens. When you talk to the media and no one cares about it. When you die from rage and oppression, from being forgotten.
I am a Palestinian who has never been able to travel to Palestine. My homeland exists for me only in stories. Instead of getting the right of return to Palestine, I grew up witnessing history repeat itself in the most brutal ways. Another Nakba, another Naksa, a genocide in Gaza. The land I was told to dream of is now a place of relentless death. I have lost relatives in the West Bank, victims of a ruthless occupation that knows no mercy, no justice. And others… I can only pray they are still alive.
What kind of cultural exchange can one expect from a state that systematically violates human rights?
A culture of dispossession and land theft?
The practice of imprisoning children and women, even those with their babies?
Or the deliberate starvation of millions until their final breaths?
This exhibition does not celebrate culture, it normalizes oppression.
It is a stain on humanity’s conscience and a dark mark in our history.
For months, Gaza has been under relentless bombardment. And yet, the world looks away, or worse, justifies it. I can’t understand how people feel when they justify or ignore the Gaza situation and proceed to cooperate with the terrorist entity of Israel.
We protest because every Palestinian lives matter. Because occupation, apartheid, and ethnic cleansing cannot be normalized. We call for an immediate ceasefire and demand the end of the blockade.
From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.
