1948년 5월 15일 이스라엘에 의해 자행된 강제 추방과 학살(’나크바‘) 기려 올해 전세계 수많은 도시에서 팔레스타인 연대 시위가 벌어졌습니다.
영국에서는 50만 명 넘는 사람들이 거리로 나와 영국의 이스라엘 지원·협조를 규탄하며 팔레스타인 대의를 옹호했습니다.
아래는 이 시위를 이끈 단체들 중 대표적 단체인 ’전쟁저지연합‘의 부의장 크리스 나인햄의 메시지입니다.
크리스 나인햄은 영국 정부의 연대 운동에 대한 탄압에도 불구하고 팔레스타인 해방을 외치고 있는 활동가입니다.
이 메시지는 5월 18일 열린 “팔레스타인인들과 연대를! 84차 집회·행진”에서 레바논인 학자이자 활동가인 라니아 하페즈 님이 대독했습니다.

Solidarity rallies for Palestine took place in cities across the world to commemorate the forced expulsion and massacre (‘Nakba’) committed by Israel on May 15, 1948.
In UK, Over half a million people took to the streets to condemn UK government’s support and collaboration with Israel and to stand up for the Palestinian cause.
Below is a message from Chris Nineham, Vice Chair of ‘Stop the War Coalition’, one of the leading organizations of the protests.
Chris Nineham is an activist who has been calling for the liberation of Palestine despite UK government’s crackdown on the solidarity movement.
This message was read out by Rania Hafez, a Lebanese scholar and activist, at the “Solidarity with Palestinians! 84th Protest & March” held on May 18.
영국의 전쟁저지연합을 대표하여 연대의 인사를 보냅니다.
이스라엘의 인종학살은 전 세계에 충격을 안겨주었습니다. 저들이 보란듯이 자행하는 잔혹함은 거의 이해 불가일 정도입니다.
이 절망적인 시기에 팔레스타인과 전 세계에 한 줄기 희망이 있다면, 그것은 점점 더 커져가는 대중 운동입니다.
영국에서는 2023년 10월 이후 25차례에 걸쳐 열린 전국적 연대 시위에 수십만 명이 참가했습니다. 한국에서도 시위가 이어지고 있다는 소식을 들으며 큰 용기와 감동을 받았습니다.
그러나 지금 이 순간에도, 우리 정부는 군사적, 외교적, 정치적으로 이스라엘을 계속 지지하고 있습니다.
하지만 미국과 그 동맹국들의 행동은 서구 질서를 떠받치는 끝모를 위선과 체계적인 폭력을 여실히 드러냈습니다.
이스라엘이 이토록 끊임없이 살육을 지속할 수 있었던 것은 바로 서방 강대국들의 지원 없이는 불가능하다는 점이 명확해졌습니다.
경찰의 탄압, 끊임없는 프로파간다, 반이스라엘 운동을 반유대주의로 몰아가는 시도에도 불구하고, 이스라엘에 대한 반대 여론은 계속해서 커지고 있습니다. 이스라엘은 이제 국제사회에서 고립된 국가가 되었습니다.
영국에서는 저를 포함한 사람들이 평화 시위를 조직했다는 이유로 형사 처벌을 받고 있습니다. 언론인, 활동가, 학자 등 수많은 사람들이 전 세계 여러 곳에서 유사한 억압을 겪고 있습니다.
하지만 이것은 곧 이스라엘의 지지자들이 여론전에서 패배하고 있다는 증거입니다.
학살에 반대하는 우리는 대부분의 사회에서 다수를 대표합니다. 우리는 흔들림 없이 싸워야 합니다. 기득권층의 입장에도 균열이 생기고 있습니다. 영국 국회의원 중 일부는 여론의 압력에 밀려 우리 정부를 비판하기 시작했습니다.
심지어 몇몇 서방 지도자들조차 가자지구에서 의도적으로 조장된 끔찍한 기근에 대해 입을 열기 시작했습니다.
우리는 거리에서 계속 싸워야 합니다. 저항을 더욱 확산시켜야 합니다. 이 투쟁은 팔레스타인을 위한 것인 동시에 우리가 어떤 세상에 살고 싶은지, 인류의 미래가 어떤 모습이어야 하는지에 대한 싸움이기도 합니다. 우리의 운동은 더 커져야만 합니다.

Israel’s genocide has sent shockwaves around the world. The barbarity on display is almost incomprehensible.
The light in this desperate time for Palestinians and the world comes from the growing popular movements.
In Britain hundreds of thousands of people have marched on 25 national demonstrations for Palestine since October 2023. It is heartening to hear of your protests in South Korea.
Even in the midst of its genocide, our government continues to back Israel, militarily, diplomatically and politically.
But the behaviour of the US and its allies has exposed the bottomless cynicism and systematic violence that underpins the western order.
It has become clear that
Israel could not continue its relentless killing without the backing of the Western powers.
Despite police repression, relentless propaganda and the attempt to portray the movement as anti semitic, opposition to Israel continues to grow. It has become a pariah state.
In Britain myself and others face criminal charges for organising peaceful protests. Journalists, activists, academics and many others are facing similar repression in many parts of the world
But this only shows that the supporters of Israel are losing the argument.
Those of us who oppose genocide represent the majority in most societies and we must remain steadfast. Cracks are starting to open up in the establishments position. MPs in the British Parliament have been shamed into speaking out against our government.
Even some Western leaders are being forced to speak out against the terrible man made famine in Gaza.
We have to stay in streets. We have to escalate. This struggle is about the Palestinians but it is also about the kind of world we want to live in, the kind of future we want for humanity. Our movement must grow.
