📰 최근 《주간경향》은 팔레스타인 예루살렘 출신의 시인·언론인·활동가 모하메드 엘 쿠르드와의 인터뷰를 통해, 가자 인종학살과 팔레스타인인들이 마주한 현실을 한국 독자들에게 전했습니다.
💔 인터뷰에서 엘 쿠르드는 팔레스타인인이 끊임없이 자신의 인간성과 무고함을 증명해야만 애도의 대상이 되는 현실을 이야기합니다. 어떤 직업을 가졌는지, 얼마나 ‘선한’ 사람이었는지를 증명해야만 생명의 가치가 인정되는 구조 자체가 문제라는 것입니다. 누구도 ‘완벽한 피해자’여야만 존엄을 인정받아서는 안 되며, 팔레스타인인의 생명 역시 다른 모든 사람의 생명과 동등한 가치를 지닌다는 가장 기본적인 원칙을 다시 묻습니다.
☝️ 특히 그는 한국 사회를 향해 “우리는 우리가 아는 것보다 훨씬 더 닮았고, 여러 면에서 역사를 공유한다고 생각한다. 과거 당신의 승리는 우리의 현재를 위한 승리가 될 것이다”라고 말합니다. 이어 “이스라엘 정부와 관계를 끊는 것, 이스라엘 기업과의 무역·경제 거래를 끊는 것, 이스라엘과 외교 관계를 끊는 것은 팔레스타인 민중만이 아니라 한국의 과거와 한국 민족을 위한 승리이기도 하다”며 한국 사회가 팔레스타인 연대의 중요한 주체가 될 수 있음을 강조합니다.
📖 엘 쿠르드는 지난해 출간한 저서 《완벽한 피해자》(한국어판, 마티, 2026년 4월)에서 팔레스타인인의 죽음은 “등에 천사의 날개를 꿰매 붙여”야 애도받을 자격이 있지만, “온 지구는 아무런 단서도 달지 않고 이스라엘인의 죽음에 비통해하고, 그 비탄을 인종학살의 연료로 바꾼다”고 지적했습니다. 이번 인터뷰는 그 문제의식을 한국 사회와의 대화 속에서 더욱 깊이 풀어낸 글이기도 합니다.

📰 Recently, the Korean weekly magazine Weekly Kyunghyang published an interview with Palestinian poet, journalist, and activist Mohammed El-Kurd, who is from Jerusalem, introducing the reality of the genocide in Gaza and the conditions faced by Palestinians to Korean readers.
💔 In the interview, El-Kurd speaks about how Palestinians are forced to constantly prove their humanity and innocence before they are considered worthy of mourning. He argues that the very system requiring people to demonstrate what profession they had or how “good” they were before their lives are recognized as valuable is fundamentally unjust. No one should have to be a “perfect victim” in order to have their dignity acknowledged, and he calls us to reaffirm the most basic principle: that Palestinian lives possess the same inherent value as every other human life.
☝️ Addressing Korean society in particular, he says, “I believe we are far more alike than we realize, and in many ways we share a common history. Your victories in the past will become victories for our present.” He continues: “Severing ties with the Israeli government, ending trade and economic relations with Israeli companies, and breaking diplomatic relations with Israel would be a victory not only for the Palestinian people, but also for Korea’s own past and for the Korean nation.” In doing so, he emphasizes that Korean society can play a significant role in standing in solidarity with Palestine.
📖 In his book Perfect Victims (Korean edition, Mati, April 2026), published in Korean this past April, El-Kurd writes that Palestinian deaths are considered worthy of mourning only if they are “stitched with angel wings onto their backs,” while “the entire world grieves Israeli deaths without qualification and transforms that grief into fuel for genocide.” This interview further develops those ideas through a dialogue with Korean society.
